Best lightweight pump on the market for filtering out bacteria and viruses

This filter will filter clean water from mud. It's fast and easy to pump water and flushes clean. I took my old one on many backpacking trips over the years; it was time for a new one. You need a little weight on end to hold collection end in a cold stream. It's better than other products on the market. Not for ultralight backpackers, where every ounce counts.

    MSR Guardian water purifier

Recently, I bought two MSR Guardians from Outdoorplay due to their great pricing.

I used my own MSR Guardian on a 17 day trip around the Mediterranean in Oct 2016. On-board ship it was unnecessary because of the ship's reverse osmosis filtration system, but I used it anyway because of so many stories about occasional sickness on cruise ships. I felt the biological protection provided by the Guardian was worth the little bit of extra effort. I used it in conjunction with a Zero water filter ( for the chemical issues) which I also brought on board.

Using the water meter that came with the Zero I found the dissolved solids in the Venice (start point) water to be about 250 and the Barcelona (end point) water to be 550. So at the start and finish where we spent a few extra days I was very glad to have the Guardian and the Zero.

At home I have concerns about computer hackers shutting done power grids and causing water purification plants to have reduced or no capacities. So as a temporary fix for two daughters and their families who live some distance away, I bought two Guardians from Outdoorplay for the biological filtration of 2,000 gallons of water. I also bought a Zero filtration system and extra filters for the chemical filtration. You would need both.

The only concern is that while the Guardian stops down to .02 microns the Rotavirus and Hepititis apparently can go down to .005 microns. Previously, I had bought a small hand-cranked ultraviolet light that doesn't…

    MSR Guardian Water Purifier Pump

The filter did its job. We were able to filter about a liter before we had to clean the ceramic filter. This could not have been easier. The disassembly and cleaning with the scotch bright pad took less than two minutes. By the end of the hike my boys could do the whole process for themselves. The stagnant brown water came out crystal clear with no smell and tasted as good. We brought MSR filtered water home and taste tested it against filtered water from our refrigerator. You could not tell the difference.

    MSR Guardian Water Purifier Pump

I bought this filter this summer to go backcountry and enjoying it. It's size and weight is just fine. After many uses though water doesn't flow as quickly.
