    Athena, and Atheno

I have been told that this is a paddle that might be preferred by women because of the smaller blade area.

That makes sense, but I (male, large) enjoy paddling with this because on longer trips the fatigue is reduced compared to a 'standard' blade, and I like the slightly higher cadence I can get with this paddle. You can brace and roll just fine with the Athena (remember, people can hand roll their kayaks). The paddle is delightfully light and easy to handle, and is very buoyant. I thought that I wanted the standard size low-angle paddle (the Kalista ??) but I opted for this and I made a good selection.

    As advertised!

The lightest paddle I own (out of 6 double blades). Several of these are the Werner Camanos. I like its rigidity and slightly smaller blade size. It does make a difference in how long I paddle. I also have an old (18 years) Grey Owl double, all carbon fiber, that a bit larger blade and almost as light. If the Athena turns out to be as durable as the Owl, the high price will be justifies.

    Werner Athena straight paddle

Really light and pops out easily on each stroke. Smaller blade size and buoyant blade really make it easy. Offset adjust, ent since this is a 2 piece is well done.

    Performs as Promised

I've had extreme shoulder pain due to arthritis for several years and was about to give up kayaking. This year I bit the bullet and got a lightweight (44 lbs) kayak and the Athena. I also learned to paddle properly, with the torso rather than shoulder movement. My pain has been reduced by about 75%. Though the price caused me quite a bit of anxiety, I have not regretted my purchase: the Athena performs exactly as promised by Werner.
