For our three-week packrafting and fishing expedition in the Brooks Range, Arthur and I decided to work with Aqua-Bound for our paddles. We needed paddles that we could rely on as we paddled over 250 miles of class 2 and 3 rapids, and on flat water. We had to depend on paddles that wouldn't break or chip as we moved over rocks and through dense thickets on rivers and small creeks. From the perspective of two whitewater instructors who spend 150+ days in the field each year, the Manta Ray Carbon 4-Piece Posi-Lok Kayak paddles from Aqua-Bound exceeded our expectations.
When we contacted Aqua-Bound, they quickly recommended the appropriate paddles for our trip. We had the choice of paddle lengths in increments of 10cm. The paddles arrived two days before expected. The first thing I noticed was how light they were, less than 30 ounces. Since our 20-day self-supported route required light gear, these paddles fit the bill.
I was satisfied by the 4-piece design of the paddles, because I was able to securely stow the paddle on the outside of my backpack without the pieces catching on branches when I was bushwhacking. The sections were compact enough for me to back them inside my 85-liter backpack with the rest of my gear for a flight. Even with wet or cold fingers, the pieces were easy to attach and detach using a one or two button system as we went back and forth between hiking and packrafting.
The carbon abX-reinforced blades are full-sized, large, and have a strong enough…
