If you are looking for a paddling activity to feed your adrenaline,
whitewater kayaking might be the activity for you. Whitewater kayaking
is done on Class two up to Class five water.
Whitewater
kayaks could be considered the sports cars of the paddling world.
You've probably seen them zipping around through the rapids on the
river. The boats are designed specifically to perform on technical,
fast moving water. Whitewater kayaking takes some practice, skill,
and determination. It is good to take a lesson. Some consider the
sport addictive, which is good because you will need to be dedicated
to become a competent and safe whitewater paddler.
There are several different disciplines of whitewater
kayaking:
Downriver
kayaking is the essence of the sport and involves moving down river
in the boat while avoiding obstacles such as rocks and river hydraulics.
Freestyle,
or play boating consists of staying in one spot on the river and
playing (performing a variety of tricks) in the current. This discipline
of kayaking has evolved rapidly in the last few years. There are
boats designed specifically to handle this type of activity.
Creek
boating is the extreme version of downriver kayaking. It involves
paddling on narrow, very technical, fast-moving creeks. Creek boating
is for experts only and there are boats specifically designed for
running technical rivers.
