So you've got your raft. There are other essential items
you will need before you hit the water to have some fun.
Frame: Raft frames hold the oars in place
and provide stability for the raft. They also provide the oarsman
with a place to sit, and a place to tie down gear. The type of frame
you choose will depend mostly on personal preference and how you
plan to use the raft.
Oars and paddles: Either paddles or oars can
power rafts. A paddle raft requires a team, while an oared raft
has one person powering the craft. Oar rigs also require a frame.
The type of power you choose depends on the type of trip you take
and the type of water you will run.
PFD: PFDs for rafting provide more flotation
and more coverage than PFDs designed for kayaking. Most rafting
PFDs have front buckles and more adjustment points to accommodate
a variety of people. Some PFDs also have padded headrests to keep
your head up should you be knocked unconscious or to keep your head
up while you are swimming.
Helmet: A helmet is considered a firm requirement
for whitewater. There are whitewater helmets made specifically for
paddling, where low-speed impacts are more likely than high-speed.
Put it on, strap it on, wear it out.
Wetsuits: Wetsuits and watersports have enjoyed
a long association. Wetsuits provide a first layer of insulation
and can be paired with a drytop, paddle jacket, and/or fleece sweater
for extra warmth. Wetsuits work by trapping a thick film of water
between the suit and your body. Once water fills the suit, it is
warmed by your skin and adds a layer of insulation. The wetsuits
that are designed especially for boaters provide freedom of motion,
durability, and warmth.
Straps: Every boater should have an arsenal
of straps. You'll need themto tie stuff down to your raft, or tie
your raft to your car, ortie your dog to your car.
Pumps: Unless you bought your raft for $15
from Wal-Mart, you are going to need something more than lungpower
to inflate your boat. Our variety of foot pumps, hand pumps, and
electric pumps are available to help you get your boat on the water
in no time.
Repair: Whether it's fixing a leak, replacing
a valve, or repairing a tear, you need to always carry a repair
kit. These items are as essential to rafting as the oars.
