BUG Rock Climbing Backpack
|Petzl BUG Rock Climbing Backpack - The BUG Climbing Backpack by Petzl was designed specifically for multi-pitch, long routes that are done in a single day. It's rounded rectangular shape maximizes volume and provides plenty of room for gear without interfering with your climbing. The volume is ideal for carrying gear on the approach and on the ropes. It carries high on the back so it reduces wear from abrasions. Wide, ergonomically shaped shoulder straps are comfortable and extra stable. The waistbelt provides additional carry comfort for heavy loads and tucks away to leave freedom of movement when climbing. An adjustable height sternum strap enhances security and freedom of movement. A single top opening with handle is a sturdy attachment point and helps to keep everything safely stored when open. Lateral compression straps keep the contents secure as well as allow you to carry a jacket on the outside. A daisy chain, side compression and rope carrying straps allow for more gear carrying options. A guidebook pocket on the outside for quick and easy access, an attachment loop for your e+LITE (emergency headlamp), a zippered mesh pocket with key clip, and a small pocket on the shoulder strap for a topo map finish off this great hydration compatible climbing pack. The Petzl BUG Climbing Backpack has been designed from the ground up to provide maximum comfort and functionality when climbing.|
I originally got this pack for long multi-pitch climbing during a week at Red Rock. It's perfect! It's just big enough to stow the rack and incidentals in the pack for the approach. The hydration pouch protected my large bladder great. It would be nice to have a removable clip on the rope straps, but that is an easy modification. It's really not that big of a deal to get the rope in there anyway. The daisy's are nice to clip up whatever you can't fit, or don't want in the pack (read climbing shoes). The suspension is great! The pack sits high enough that it doesn't mess with getting gear off your harness, but at the same time you don't hit your head on it when you look up. It's low profile enough that you forget it's even there when your climbing. The best feature of all is the guidebook pocket. It's really nice to be able to get to the guidebook without having to open the pack and risk accidentally pulling out and dropping something else. Very well designed pack for long trad routes.
Been using this for a month now and really like it. Good fit, size and durability along with simple thought out features. Fabric holds up to abuse well and it rides above your harness. For trad climbs this pack will hold, approach shoes, water, lunch and layers but don't expect to put your rack in there. After a modification you can easily clip your rope underneath but unless you make it a micro coil it will hit the back of your legs and catch on loose rocks so be careful.
Overall a great bag. I was expecting it to be a little bigger but was surprised at how small it was when I opened the box. I bought the bag to be a gym specific bag and possibly a few day climb trips. For those two purposes it's probably pushing it. To the gym it fits: my shoes, harness, belay devices, a few carabineers, gym lock, shorts, and that's it. With that in mind I'd find it hard to be a day climb bag unless I wear my harness up the hike and have my shoes clipped to the outside of the bag. It is compact and a comfy bag once you get it on your back. Overall I can't complain about the price. It's nice to have waist and sternum straps and overall I'm pleased.
