Patagonia Men's Merino 3 Midweight Hoody - When you're backpacking in an area with everchanging weather conditions you'll really appreciate a great layering piece like the Men's Merino 3 Midweight Hoody by Patagonia. This warm, versatile hoody is made of fine merino wool responsibly sourced from the grasslands of Patagonia that is then slow washed for softness and shrink resistance without the use of chlorine. It is then blended with 100% recycled Capilene polyester for improved moisture management, increased durability and faster dry time. The fabric is wonderfully soft, has a great warmth-to-weight ratio, breathes, resists odor, stretches as you move and regulates body temperature. The offset seams of this hoody minimize chafing under layers and packs while the high collar and self-fabric hood with anatomical shaping offer additional warmth. Shoulder and underarm panels are designed to ensure full mobility and the hidden thumb loops help keep your wrists covered and make layering a breeze. The Patagonia Men's Merino 3 Midweight Hoody helps you to stay warm and comfortable during active pursuits.

I've now used this baselayer on several Ski Patrol shifts and a couple of sub-freezing bike commutes, and could not be more delighted. For little-bit-chilly days, putting the hood up under the helmet keeps the drafts off without overheating my head; with the zipper all the way up it does likewise in front. For below-zero days, layer it up with Capilene or fleece and you will be one toasty critter. Doesn't get smelly, DEFINITELY doesn't get anything like itchy, and the thumb loops are effective without being annoying. I only wish I had more of them. I recommend it for "skiing" because I only had one available choice, but it's excellent for biking, hiking, and just knocking around; it's light enough that it ventilates well in warm surroundings by itself.

I love natural fibers. I love wool, but it's itchy. This Hoody doesn't itch. It's the best because it protects from the head down and the hoody fits into the helmet. I wear this everyday for skiing and wish I had a few more. True to size. Delicious hoody!!

I love this piece. Why? The fit: you may have to size down, I usually wear Med. in Paty shirts and jackets but went with a Sm. in this one, I'm 5'8" and 190lbs. That made things trim and non-bunchy (crucial!) but the hoody is big enough to accomodate even my big head (7 3/4" ballcap). The merino has a slight give without feeling like a loose stretch, so it conforms to your body, yet the material is thin enough that the hoody doesn't feel like a dead weight when down. The versatility: I wear this as a sun layer even when hot, and the weave and merino-ness makes things non-stinky and aids in evaporating sweat. Yet again because of the wool-ness, it makes for a warm but not sweaty-hot mid-layer/base-layer for colder temps. The utililty: this packs down so small, even smaller than the R1 hoody, and so it's great for that essential piece for the pack, regardless of where you go. The only weak point is the thumb loops, which aren't self-fabric in the arm itself, but a separate small loop, but they've held up fine so far in many uses, and plus there's the Paty Guarantee. Overall, this is just an awesome piece in size fit and function, and made awesomer by the fact that it's merino, so you get the non-stink, long-wearing, insulate-when-wet, properties of wool. Love it!! Snag it while you can because I tried to get this a couple years ago and they had been out of the line for while, not sure why (maybe to make for variety in the lineup?) but get it now while you can. Won't regret it.

This light wool shirt has just become my favorite piece both for relaxing as well as working outside. Everything is great from the thumb loops to the silly under helmet hood with the high collar. So soft.
