Patagonia Men's Capilene 4 Expedition Weight Bottoms - Epic days call for the technical insulation of Capilene 4 Expedition Weight Bottoms from Patagonia. The warmest and most breathable baselayer in the Capilene family, Polartec Power Dry High Efficiency fabric feels soft and stretchy. Capilene 4's smooth jersey face glides beneath layers and the brushed fleece interior warms your core, wicks moisture, and rests smoothly against your skin. A gusseted crotch gives you full-range mobility, and the soft knit mesh interior of the elastic waistband means next-to-skin comfort. Gladiodor Odor Control helps you and your partners breathe a little easier. In cold conditions, Patagonia Capilene 4 Expedition Weight Bottoms keep your skin dry when you’re pushing the pace and your core warm when the action slows down.

I live in Mongolia, and while style is one of the top priorities, staying warm may be the utmost. The temperatures have only reached about -20F so far, but these pants have kept me warm on the walks to and from work/the store/friends' houses/etc. I wear them alone or under pants, and they are great. The waist is a bit high and a bit tight, but overall, the fit is great.

I thought I was going over the top when I ordered these as a snowboarding baselayer (I'm originally from Florida and get cold easily!), but they are actually perfect! The material is very easy to move in and stays dry, but has kept me very warm riding in everything from 30 degrees F to -15 degrees (bbbrrrrrrrr). The waistband is very comfortable too! I'm 5'5" and 130 lbs, the medium works for me but they are a little loose after the day is done.

Not bad as a base layer, but material is a bit see through, and doesn't have enough stretch to be completely comfortable. They' are warm enough for an average ski day/hiking under a good shell, but for sub-zero temps (F) I'd add a few extra layers. Also, I like my base layers to be stretch enough so that i forget I'm wearing them - these don't quite cut it.

I typically wear these bottoms for winter cycling down to -25C with absolute comfort. They've also been used for ice climbing and for walking my geriatric, jawless Pomeranian in bone-crushing cold. I was toasty, she was miserable. I find that the redesign in the new weight of the cap 4 makes way more sense than the old cap 4. No longer is the cap 4 a warmer layer than the R1, but it still slams you with warmth while providing a crazy level of breathability. 5 Hours ice climbing in -15C to -5C today and over a pair of simple guide pants, I wasn't cold nor was I sweaty. I was comfortable and didn't notice or need to think about my leggings. I've used Cap 1, 2, 3 and the old 4 and these new cap 4s make sense for "expedition weight" to me.
