Ocean Kayak's Prowler 15 Trident is one of the best designed fishing-specific kayaks I have had the pleasure of paddling. The hull is about three inches longer than the standard Prowler 15, and the Trident has some outstanding features, including the Rod Pod, Sonar Shield, and sonar-specific scupper hole. I mounted a Humminbird PMax 215 under the Sonar Shield, and am very pleased with knowing the unit is protected and shielded from glare. It will also lower the chance of having condensation in the screen, which I have encountered on other SOT's. I did still go with my typical through-hull transducer application, as the transducer scupper adapter was not easily obtainable. The Rod Pod is also a great feature, and is easily accessible "on the fly". The hatch for the Rod Pod is a slight bit wider for its placement than I would desire, causing my legs to feel a little bit too snug between the hatch and the sides of the cockpit. This is a minor issue. As for the handling of the kayak, it paddled very well in small chop, and with both oncoming and crosswinds. I would highly recommend the Trident for anyone who wants a great fishing platform, or simply enjoys paddling a sit-on-top kayak. Ocean Kayak definitely put the effort into the design of this one!

This is the best deck Ocean Kayak's come out with to date, not to mention that the ride is very dry. The stern sits a bit high out of the water and catches crosswind fairly easily. Other than that, the boat handles the rough stuff very well: slop, wake, swell, wind waves, etc. The coolest new deck feature is the rod pod. I can stow all of my rods, even 8’, without getting up from the seatwell. Just as important, I can remove them fairly easily as long as I keep the clutter down on the inside of the hull. I'm not a huge fan of the sonar shield as it looks like it was built with one brand in mind, Humminbird. If you don't have a Humminbird you can choose to ignore the sonar shield or you can simply treat it as another small utility hatch, storing tackle odds and ends, cut bait, tools, GPS, etc.

Great boat, steady and stable, huge weight capacity, excellent center hatch, and the Sonar Shield concept really works. The Trident is a lot of boat to move around, however, the speed is comparable to others in its class. You can sit on the rod pod hatch and you can also sit side-saddle from the cockpit itself giving you more options for fishing. The ride is high and dry. You can carry as much gear as you want. A friend calls these sorts of kayaks the "floating couches." I think of it as a pick-up truck. This is a very stable and forgiving kayak!
