FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How does neoprene work?

Neoprene works best if it fits snug enough for you to breath comfortably and tight enough to restrict water flowing through the suit. By trapping the water in the suit, your body warms it up. Neoprene is comprised of many small bubbles. This trapped air is the insulating factor. In general, The thicker the neoprene, the warmer the suit.

Neoprene is the oldest synthetic rubber, invented in the 1930s. It’s an important part of wetsuits, HydroSkin, spray skirts, gloves, and water shoes. Traditionally, oil has been the raw material in the manufacturing process of neoprene. But thanks to Terraprene, there are now more environmentally friendly options.

What is Terraprene?

The raw material in Terraprene is limestone rock instead of oil, which has traditionally been used in the manufacturing process of neoprene. Limestone is very common, making up some 10% of the world’s sedimentary rock formations. In addition to saving an increasingly limited natural resource, oil, Terraprene-processed neoprene is warmer and lighter, with more stretch, buoyancy, and comfort than traditional neoprene.

Is Terraprene warmer than traditional neoprene?

More cells, or tiny bubbles, are formed in Terraprene versus traditional neoprene. It’s these cells, filled with inert nitrogen gas, that create neoprene’s insulating property. More cells equal more insulation and more warmth. Terraprene keeps you warmer, because it has thicker cell walls that reduce the compression of the material as you move, sit on it, etc. These thicker walls help prevent loss of inert nitrogen gas. Terraprene is also more buoyant, giving you more flotation and stretches more than oil-based material.

What is titanium adhesive?

The glue that adheres the woven material to the neoprene contains tiny flakes of shiny titanium metal that reflect and retain your body heat, maximizing your thermal insulation.

What are glued and blind stitched seams?

Blind stitched seams are waterproof, very stretchy, and invisible from the outside when stitched on the inside. These seams are designed to prevent excess water from entering the suit, which in turn keeps you warm. These seams are glued first, then stitched together without completely penetrating the neoprene, creating a waterproof product.
