Sizing for the Kelty Women's Redwing 40 Backpack:
I purchased and used this bag for a series of winter-weather day hikes. The pack is roomy enough to include the standard day hike gear plus an extra warm layer and rain gear. It would be larger than needed for a summer day hike, but I'm not sure if there is enough room inside for even a summer-weight down sleeping bag. The bottom of the bag features two rows of bar tacking for tying on gear that won't fit inside. I like the panel design for day hikes where you might need to remove things from your bag during the day, but the top of this bag is a bit peaked, meaning that you will have to undo the top tension straps to be able to access anything but a very small item placed at the top of the pack. The zippered side pouches were the correct size for my 0.75L water bottle, which was handy since I could access them without taking the pack completely off. It is also possible to store a pair of collapsed trekking poles in the pass-through behind a side pouch, though you cannot put much in the side pouch if you do. One of the few things I didn't like about the pack was the small mesh pouches on the side. They are too loose to trust small items in them, but are located where you can't put anything large in them. The only damage the pack suffered after a two weeks of heavy use was one of the mesh pouches snagging. The torso is not adjustable, but the waist belt can be moved up or down by about an inch. I carried the pack with 20% of my body weight over ten hour days for four days in a row and six days out of eight without any pain, so it is comfortable and distributes the weight better than my "deluxe" laptop backpack.
