Kelty Mistral -20 Degree Synthetic Camping Sleeping Bag - The Kelty Mistral negative 20 degree sleeping bag is ideal for budget-conscious campers who want reliable comfort for their winter camping endeavors. Two-layer offset quilt construction with a differential cut maximizes loft and warmth. Extra Cloudloft insulation over the chest area keeps you warm through the coldest of nights. An anti-snag zipper draft tube, full-baffle collar and ground-level side seams prevent heat from escaping. The two-way locking blanket zipper let you ventilate the Mistal camping sleeping bag, and it can be fully unzipped and opened flat for use as a blanket. With internal liner loops, sleeping pad security loops, and hang loops for storage, the Kelty Mistral -20 degree camp sleeping bag ensures a warm night's sleep.

I used this bag in southern Wisconsin, with temperatures ranging from low single digits at night to middle twenties during the day. For added warmth I included a wool liner that bills itself as being "as warm as two blankets." As always, winter camping requires insulation beneath the bag (temperature ratings assume adequate insulation will be used). I was warm & comfortable for most of the night, but I did find two problems: 1) my toes became mildly cold around 4 or 5 am and 2) the insulation around the zipper was not sufficient to prevent cold from seeping in that way. Around the same time as my toes started to get cold I began to notice a thin line of cold along the right side of my body. This was not too uncomfortable, but I expect to place the the bag within a three-season rectangular bag next time, and probably forgo the wool liner.

A -20 degree bag for under $100?! Sounded too good to be true, but so far VERY GOOD! The bag is warm and let me sleep under the stars even with a light coating of snow. But be warned, this is not a small bag when it's packed, and it's not lightweight so I wouldn't use it on multi-day hikes but for car camping and road trips it's perfect!
